Norwegian Cuisine

Norway is known for its salmon, but also for rakfisk which is a Norwegian dish, usually cooked on special species of fish. Rakfisk is similar to the Swedish fermented herring. Norway is also known for Norwegian aquavit, a yellowish alcohol spiced with cumin. Rømmeporridge is a Norwegian specialty. The porridge is made from wheat flour that is boiled with rømme (fat Norwegian sour cream). The fat from the sour cream camps like melted butter as a layer on top of the crop. The porridge can be eaten as it is or with cinnamon and sugar. One of Norway’s national dishes is sheep meat. The mutton chops are cooked together in a large pot of cabbage, potatoes and whole peppercorns.
